The Institute of History at the Technical University of Darmstadt (Department of Modern History, Prof. Dr. Nicolai Hannig) is looking for a scholarship fellow for the research project „Build Back Better“, funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, starting August 1, 2022 for an expected period of 3 years.
The research project „Build Back Better! Architectures of Security and Natural Disasters: Aftercare, Reconstruction and Prevention in the 20th Century“ is funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation. It is part of the research program „Security, Society and State“ and led by Prof. Dr. Nicolai Hannig.
In two subprojects with different regional focuses, the research project examines the reconstruction of cities after earthquakes and investigates what role local cultures of memory played in this process. Subproject I examines humanitarian architectures in reconstruction in South America. The scholarship is awarded for Subproject II, which evaluates the significance of monuments and cultural assets for disaster management since 1945, focusing on earthquakes in Italy and the former Yugoslavia. The main aim is to identify and historically evaluate relevant actors such as local self-help groups, relief organizations, authorities, national and international research and prevention initiatives.
The range of tasks include in particular:
– Preparation and independent execution of subproject II through a dissertation/PhD.
– Archival research
– Preparation and implementation of a joint project workshop of the research project
– Participation in joint publications of the research project
– Willingness to cooperate on an interdisciplinary basis and to communicate research results to the political and social public, especially with the involvement of the Gerda Henkel Foundation’s science portal L.I.S.A.
The fellowship is endowed with 1,600 € per month. Child allowances are paid (€400 for one child, €100 per month for each additional child). Travel and material funds are also available.
The research project serves as an academic qualification through a dissertation/PhD in the subject of history.
Prerequisites for a successful application are a very good academic university degree (Master or comparable) in the field of modern/contemporary history. Applications from candidates with degrees in related subjects (Ethnology, Southeastern European Studies, Urban Studies, Sociology, Heritage Studies, or similar) are also welcome if suitable. Italian language skills and/or knowledge of Slavic languages, (especially Macedonian and/or Serbian) or the willingness to acquire such language skills are beneficial for the application process.
